It is perhaps understandable that many should regard the law and its enforcers with suspicion, but actually having a good legal system is a blessing beyond price. A society with good and impartial rules of conduct for public and private life has a solid foundation for being a happy one. The alternative is being subject to the whim of one man or one group in authority; history is full of examples of how miserable that can be.

The average citizen obeys the rules in most matters. Traffic violations are common lapses, as many people exceed the speed limits set on roads or try to beat traffic stoplights. Some individuals may try to circumvent taxes and some may work in areas where set rules have not yet been designed. But in the main, most people operate legally - following the rules of conduct - in their lives and business dealings.

The basic rights of mankind are set forth in the legal codes of a country or a district. Although all benefit from the highest laws of the land, many do not consider them on a daily basis. Closer to home are the regulations that direct the affairs of commerce, control insurance agencies, financial institutions, and medical practitioners, and set the boundaries for the military and civil law enforcement.

In the course of daily life, disputes will arise over property, contract performance, satisfaction of terms agreed to, and truth in things like advertising and labeling. The injured party, or those who think themselves injured, have the right to seek legal help in getting the courts to enforce compliance if they can prove they have been unjustly treated.

The rules of a country change as time goes on. Take as an example the rights of those with disabilities. In former days, handicapped people had few resources for education, could not use many public buildings or means of transportation, and had few avenues of help outside of their families. Think how things have changed, partly through the efforts of those who used the law to compel greater compliance with the rules of equality that entitle all citizens to access to public services.

Those of us who feel that we have been defrauded can get legal help and advice. Whether the issue is medical malpractice, failure of insurance coverage, contract violation, improper performance of workmen or employers, or personal injury suffered because of the actions of others, retaining the services of a lawyer is so important that it can be a legal right (in criminal cases).

So what if a company promised strict quality control but sold inferior merchandise? Who could make them advertise honestly if there were no regulations that kept them to a high standard? So what if someone poisoned your water or tainted your food, made you sick while promising health, or injured you when you were blameless? You would have no recourse.

Regarding the law as an enemy or something to be feared is short sighted. Rather, all should recognize the importance of these bonding rules in a civilized world and seek to both uphold and protect them as an invaluable national treasure.
