For centuries, mothers around the world have seen their children succumb to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. The majority of these types of deaths go on unexplained by further analysis.

Without a well known cause it can be worrysome to a mother who does not want to make the wrong decision that could cost their babies life. Most cases are documented when the mother finds their baby dead in the morning after they were fine upon the last check during the night.

As more cases come streaming in, doctors do get better at recognizing certain risk factors and if you know these as well you can help to mitigate the chances that your child will ever be put in a scenario where they are unsafe.

Newborns and infants lack much strength needed to hold themselves up, and that means he must pay extra special attention when picking them up or putting them down on a bed or in their baby bassinet. Giving them the added support around the head and neck area is a must.

It is in this vein that you must never lay your infant down in their bassinet while they are on their stomach. You may think they are able to roll themselves around however they do not have the strength in order to do so in can suffocate themselves. Even if they manage to keep their faces away from a blanket or other type of bassinet bedding, they need an ample not oxygen and such a confined area can cause a buildup of CO2. Leading experts believe that excess CO2 may be a contributing factor to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The chances of SIDS are greatly mitigated if the baby's sleeping quarters are well ventilated with a fan or other type of air motion system. This will ensure a fresh supply of oxygen to keep their bodies healthy as they sleep.

Make sure that the sheets and bassinet bedding that you use have a snug fit because any excess cloth can serve to cover your infant's head thereby making it difficult for them to breathe through the night.

The optimal and safest situation is leaving only the cover for the bassinet and not throwing in any other sheets are covers. However depending on where you live this may not be feasible because of the temperatures in your area. If you are stuck in a situation where you must use a cover be sure to check your baby in tight around the chest area, but do not talk their hands and arms in.

It is not recommended that you sleep with your baby in the same bed because this causes a greater risk for asphyxiation as well as other bodily harm if you happen to roll over on them. However since the proximity is highly recommended by doctors, a great middle ground is a cosleeper bassinet.

About the Author

Baby bassinets with a co-sleeper design allow you to join your bed with your infant's bassinet. This gives each of you a separate sleeping area, but you are right next to your baby should they have nightmares or you need to breast feed. Since sharing a bed isn't an option, a co-sleeper bassinet gives you a closeness that is hard to replicate with any normal crib.
