If you are in the process of designing the rooms in your home to suit your personal style, there are a lot of options from which to choose. It is possible to creative a big statement without spending a fortune. Accessories are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and purposes, and they often attract more attention than some of your larger furniture pieces. If you are in search of great ways to spruce up a space, or put the finishing touches on the room you are about to complete, the right accessories are the answer. Many accessories are utilitarian as well as decorative. Lamps can create a big impact, and you can add Quoizel lighting or a new Chandelier to attract the eye upward and illuminate the room. Also, you should consider decorative lamps, floor lamps, and mood lights for a great effect.
In addition to room lights, consider adding fabric accents. Even those who are conservative designers can let loose. If painting in bright hues is too much, you can add this color in small ways in the fabrics. Curtains add a pop of color to the walls that will not overwhelm as much as painting four walls would. You can also tone it down and use only brightly colored pillows and a single throw that is red, orange, or bright green.
Area rugs also offer a chance to infuse color. Even if you have hardwood floors or neutral carpet, the rug will bring a splash of color to a mundane area. This also brings texture into the space.
Once your walls and floors are set, make determinations about your artwork. Even those with subdued pictures, paintings, and sculptures, can create a statement. Consider using images that are special to you and your family. If you do not want to decorate with family photos, take photographs of special destinations that your family loves. A photo of a sunset on the beach may seem traditional and generic to most people, but if it is the sunset on the beach where you spent your honeymoon, it becomes a beautiful piece of art that is also personal. You can take photographs of current items as well. If your child has a favorite toy, take a photo of the toy and incorporate it into the design of their room. If photographed properly, this photo can last a long time in their design.
Also consider having your family create artwork together. Alone, each person may lack art skills. But if each member of the family gets together and adds something to a piece, it becomes a group effort. This can be abstract or literal, whatever your family and your personal style is most comfortable with. Accessories are the best way to personalize a space.
