A job interview tends to be a very one-sided affair. The interviewer asks you a number of interview questions and you try to answer these to the best of your ability.

However, generally near to the end of the job interview, a good interviewer should give you the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about the job or the company. It is even more necessary that a candidate has questions to ask an interviewer if it is an Internet or telephone job interview, which is more likely if the employer is recruiting online.

As more and more companies are recruiting online the traditional form of face-to-face job interviews, which can involve the candidate traveling long distances, is becoming less prevalent. There are obvious benefits to this approach, such as the lower cost and the time saved for all parties but most importantly for job applicants, if you already have questions to ask an interviewer this gives you the opportunity, as it is an integral part of the communication process.

So, what questions can you ask an interviewer?

Obviously, you need to prepare these properly before you are at the interview. Your questions need to be relevant to the job, the organization and your employer.

Avoid any questions that can be easily answered by a visit to the company's website or literature, as this could highlight that you have not completed any background research on the company before you the interview.

You should also be careful if you decide to ask about salary and related benefits at the first interview, as you do not want to give the impression that you are only interested in the financial aspects of the job instead of the job content.

This list of questions may be useful to you when you are preparing for a job interview:

1. What are the responsibilities in this position?
2. What areas will I have to give top priority to in the first month in the job?
3. Are there any immediate problems that need attending to?
4. How will my performance be measured?
5. What are the future promotion prospects in the company?
6. Is there any training for new employees?
7. How much authority will I be given to run the department?
8. What is the reputation of the department within the company?
9. What are the objectives for the department that I will be working in?
10. Can you give me a picture of the company's organizational structure?
11. What are the immediate goals of the company?
12. Do you perceive any threats that could affect jobs in the near future?
13. What is the key opportunity that the company is pursuing just now?
14. When are you aiming to make a decision?
15. If you offer me this job, what start date would you be aiming for?

You should definitely prepare some questions to ask an interviewer so that you will be more confident when go to the interview. You will not be able to ask all the questions so pick the ones that are most important to you and make sure you get the opportunity to ask them.
