In the past, trying to train to become a plumber was problematic. Initially, trainee plumbers could only gain the skills and qualifications they needed to start working form a college. The plumber training courses were often up to two years long and often require students to attend full time five days a week. This often left students with a clear choice; learn and earn later, or earn now with no skills.
These plumber training courses were also unsuitable for mature students, as the college courses would be designed for an audience of 16 - 24 year olds. Many mature students could simply not commit to the course, due to time and financial restraints.
These problems have helped contribute to a skills shortage in the UK, and now there is an urgent need for qualified plumbers.
Problem Free Plumber Training Courses
To soften the blow of the shortage, the avenues to becoming a plumber were made much easier to access for all. Plumber training courses were adapted, allowing students to enrol on shorter more intensive courses; allowing them to train and gain qualifications quickly, allowing them to utilize the acquired skills and experience in everyday situations.
Mature students have also found these fast track plumber training courses to be incredibly useful. Instead of training for 24 months solid, trainee plumbers can start with a short four week course, and add to their qualifications with other short courses while they work.
City & Guilds and NVQ's are still available, but they have been made more accessible to both younger and mature students.

The opportunities are endless once you have completed your plumber training. Your skills can be used in this country to contribute to the skills shortage, or you can take your skills overseas. Many plumbers find the most profitable avenue is to go self employed; however, you are free to choose the plumbing career that best suits you. Remember, once you become a plumber, you will need to regularly attend updates and refresher courses to keep your qualifications valid.
